OUR FIRST REAL GEOCAHHING ACTIVITY

Young fans of the “Treasures of the Mountains Project” did the first real geocaching activity in the mountains.
After getting the necessary theoretical knowledge about geocaching and the use of GPS device, we carried out our first hiding a cache activity on 6th April. We arranged a visit to our plantation area in the mountains just behind our school. The nature club members were also with us and we located a hidden container under a pile of rocks. We also planted young trees in the memory of our project. The moment when we found the cache located by our teachers was great fun. We felt that we found a real treasure. When we were back at school we uploaded the coordinates in the official geocahing site and now anybody can try to find it. On 24th April we are going to Cappadocia to locate our second container. There are also some caches hidden by other geocachers in the area and we will try to find one of them as well as hiding our second cache.

Young Fans of the Treausers of the Mountains Project

Our primary and secondary students had a lesson about Geocaching in the school garden. Adem Hasgül, the coordinator of Paragliding World Cup –Tour 2007 Kayseri-Turkey and the academic advisor of mountaineering club of Erciyes University, visited our school and taught us how and what a GPS used for. We got very useful information about the basic functions of the device and tried to perform how to hide and seek a cache theoretically. The next steps will be a trekking activity up to Mount Ali hiding a real treasure on top of it. Our school is situated just on the skirt of this mountain and it is famous for the sport of paragliding.
